I had never heard of Macreddin until my brother-in-law started raving about some golf course that was beautiful, challenging, fun, very well designed and maintained. To be honest, I thought a course as good as he described would have been common knowledge. It is that good and for some reason, still isn't very well known.

I've played here on a number of occasions now and am looking forward to the next time I get to play here, which seems to be a common sentiment expressed by anyone I've dragged along. I'd love to describe each hole, because, almost all are very memorable. From the first tee you get a sense of playing on a course that was well thought out and that is tough but fair. It climbs from the first tee and it a course that is genuinely one that I'd recommend a buggy for. What goes up, must come down, and it does so breathtakingly on the 4th hole - a 200+ par 3, where the tee is about 150 feet above the green. The scenery is beautiful and I've never seen a group playing this hole without someone taking out a camera. Other holes that really stand out are the 8th, 9th, 12th,13th,17th & 18th.
Although this is a parkland course, it seems to take features from both parkland and links, mixing them in an interesting, rather than irritating, way from hole to hole. What's a real achievement on this course, I feel, is that it doesn't seem to fit any mould, without feeling like a mix and match course. There are driveable par 4's, tough to reach in 2 par 4's, tricky, but exciting par 3's and long par 5's. There's left and right doglegs without one dominating so you don't feel like you're on a loop. This is a long course but also requires accuracy and most of all planning. When you do finish, I can pretty much guarantee you'll want another go, but will probably be too wrecked to try.

There are one or two weak points - there's no clubhouse (they operate out a a portacabin) and it's cash only without a nearby ATM that I know of! So make sure you bring some with you and also be sure to pre-book a caddy car as they are usually in short supply. There are one or two "open" holes in the mix and ones that you feel will get better as they mature.

In summary, no I don't have any connection to Macreddin and am not receiving any gratuities for this glowing tribute, but would definitely rate this as one of my favourite courses in Ireland. It's young and there are a few open holes but all in all it is just as my brother-in-law described and more. Really good deals can be found and I'd urge you to grab them when you find them as this is a special course.
